Is this a real possibility or is there a bit of hype (hypervalutation of the actual possibilities of the technology)? First of all, what is artificial intelligence (abbreviated AI in English)? AI is a combined set of technologies that act synergistically, enabling the functioning of computers and robots as if they were animated by human-like intelligence. A key component of AI is the ability to learn (machine learning); by collecting and analyzing historical data, the machines are able to make decisions independently between several options.

The machine learning is at the base of every IA application, including but not limited to:

  • Predictive analysis,aimed at identifying potential future events, from the capital markets to the weather and to the purchasing behavior
  • Natural language processing (NLP),which is the ability to understand and use human languages
  • Machine vision, for the recognition of visual inputs with levels of accuracy impossible for humans

Machine learning can be of three types: supervised, unsupervised, reinforced. The supervised mode provides a set of data organized, categorized and described, from which the machines are able to learn and then make decisions. The unsupervised mode, on the contrary, provides un-categorized and not described data, where the organization of the data and the subsequent learning is performed directly by the machine. Finally, in the reinforced mode the machine learns through trials and errors, thanks to a feedback mechanism on each test based on rewards or penalties.

The recent improvements in machine learning are due to scientific advances in neural networks, which are composed of a set of computational nodes that mimic the functioning of the biological brains. At the same time, the training phase is essential for the AI ​​to work effectively and to avoid wrong (and sometimes embarrassing) behaviors.

In this sense the Analytics (defined as the discipline that deals with identifying relevant models, otherwise called insights, starting from a significant amount of data) can create a strongly synergistic effect and amplify the benefits associated with machine learning.
